The Wickman family move to Paris from London, following a fortuitous and perfectly timed offer from an eccentric stranger. Once there, their extraordinary run of good luck continues, until Fifi arrives in their lives. Fifi is smelly, unhygienic, antisocial and without doubt, the ugliest dog in the world. The only person able to love the dog is her indulgent and saintly neighbour, Madame Mal-Odour (who curiously lost her sense of smell in a freak accident during a thunder storm in 1953).
Jamie Wickman just wants a quiet life and would secretly love to be a train driver. His daughter wants to be left in peace to run her black-market in blue sweets, with her friend Maria. However, Susie Wickman has set her sights on becoming an integral part of the social hierarchy of Paris’ elite. It seems that only her dog and neighbour stand between her and a free pass into the wonderful world of Countess di Zlexia’s inner circle.
She plans to do away with them both, until a series of unexpected incidents reveal something about her dog, neighbour and family that drastically change her priorities. These lead to a meeting with Professor Keren de Communete which gives her something more urgent to consider than a life-time providing calorie-free nibbles to surgically-enhanced faces.

This was surprisingly funny- very English style, understated. I don’t think young children would understand much, but 15s up to adults would. The only slight criticism is that it is read fast, but that sort of suits the style of the humor.
