We'll cover the new state-of-the-art techniques for detecting deception. Very importantly, we'll also discuss how to apply the tools and techniques to the significantly more difficult task of detecting lies over the phone and in text messages and emails.
In addition to defending against deception, we'll also discuss the tools and techniques in this book from the opposite perspective - for those times you need to be an effective liar and guard against having your deception detected by others.
We'll discuss signs someone could be lying to you: Body language, verbal indicators, speech patterns, word choice, hand gestures, facial expression inconsistencies, difficult-to-control physiological responses, and more. We'll also discuss the ways you can question people to trap them in a lie or make their lies blatantly stand out. We'll cover the classic 9 step 'Reid Technique' used in most police interrogations so you know not only how to apply it when talking to others, but also how to guard against it and stay out of jail. We'll also discuss the flaws in the polygraph lie detector and how people beat it.
There are two forms of deception you'll have to uncover: Deception by concealment and deception by falsification. When talking to someone, there are both central questions and peripheral questions. Each has both strengths and weaknesses whether you're the lie catcher or the lie teller.
We'll also cover how groups of people trying to deceive you sabotage themselves, and the rest of the group, by unintentionally making common errors that make lies clearly stand out - even when they're standing right next to their friends.
We'll also cover how people unknowingly reveal more information than they planned to through their word choice, and how to uncover a person's true beliefs on hot political issues - despite what they might tell you and others when trying to fit in.
